History Of The Kohls Kid Who Care Scholarship

The Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship was established in 2001 by the Kohl’s Corporation to recognize and reward outstanding young volunteers who are making a difference in their communities. The scholarship is awarded to students in grades 6-12 who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteerism and service.

Level of Study: Open to students who are currently enrolled in college or trade school within two years after graduation from high school in Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, New Mexico, or Texas Students are required to have a 3.0 grade point average

Scholarship Values and Inclusions

The Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship is a $10,000 award that is paid directly to the student’s accredited educational institution.

  • National Winners – $9,000 for national winners (5 in each age group) plus an additional $1,000 donation to a charity of the recipient’s choice
  • Regional Winners – $1,000 (over 200 award winners)
  • Local Store Winners – $50 Kohl’s store gift card and certificate (2,100 store winners)

The scholarship can be used for tuition, fees, books, and other educational expenses.

In addition to the financial award, the Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship winner also receives the following:

  • A trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Kohl’s Kids Who Care scholarship celebration
  • A $1,000 donation to a nonprofit organization of their choice
  • Recognition in their local Kohl’s store and on the Kohl’s website

Eligibility and Other Details:

To be eligible for the Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a permanent resident of the United States
  • Be enrolled in grades 6-18
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Have volunteered at least 100 hours in the past year
  • Submit a completed online application form
  • Write a 500- to 1,000-word essay about their volunteer experience
  • The scholarship is open to anyone over the age of 18.
  • There is no age cap. College-bound high school seniors are preferred but there is an exception for students graduating from elementary, middle school, or other early high school.
  • There are some specific rules. While the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program is intended to be a merit scholarship, there are many different kinds of scholarships.
