About the Vanier Canada Graduates Scholarships: The Vanier Canadian Government Scholarships are available to international students who wish to pursue PhD studies at prestigious Canadian universities. The Scholarships (Vanier CGS) were established to attract and retain world-class Ph.D. candidates and position Canada as a global hub of excellence in research and higher education. The grants are for doctoral degrees (combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD).

Eligibility for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship
To be eligible for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, the following are the requirements:
- Required language: English.
- Eligible Countries: Permanent Residents of Canada, Canadian Citizens, and Foreign Citizens
- You should be working on your first doctoral degree (including dual undergraduate/graduate research programs like MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., and JD/Ph.D. if they have a documented and significant research component).
- Funding is only available for the PhD portion of a combined degree. Doctoral studies must be completed within 20 months of May 1, 2023.
- You should only be nominated by one Canadian university that has received a Vanier CGS quota.
- You should intend to pursue full-time doctoral (or a dual graduate program such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D.) studies and research at the nominating institution during the summer semester or the academic year after the announcement of results. Note that only the Ph.D. element of a dual degree is eligible for financing.
- To pursue or finish a doctoral degree, you must not now hold or have held a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
- You should have received a first-class average from your institution in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates are urged to inquire about the institution’s concept of a first-class average.

Step-by-step application guide for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship
- The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship Programme does not accept direct applications. You must have been recommended by a Canadian university with a Vanier CGS allocation.
- Only one Canadian university can nominate you, and it must be the one where you want to pursue your Ph.D. studies.
- If you want to be nominated by UVic, contact your department’s graduate adviser and indicate your interest in the Vanier Scholarship. The Faculty of Graduate Studies will solicit one candidate from each department in early September of each year.
- If nominated, submit the entire Vanier application using the online site.
- Make careful to include all components of the application.
