About the MAECI Scholarship – The term “MAECI Scholarship” refers to scholarships awarded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI in its Italian abbreviation). For the academic year 2023-2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) offers grants in favor of foreign citizens not residing in Italy and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)* in order to foster international cultural, scientific, and technological cooperation, promote Italian language and culture, and support Italy’s economic system in the world (according to Law 288/55 and its subsequent changes and additions). Grants are provided to pursue study, training, and/or research programs at Italian Higher Education Institutes, both public and legally recognized.

MAECI Scholarship Value/Inclusions
Tuition Fees: Depending on the regulations of each university, grantees may be excluded from paying enrollment and tuition fees. Courses in Italian language and culture that require enrollment fees are not exempt.
Medical and Health Insurance: MAECI will provide grantees with health and medical/accident insurance for the length of the grant. Pre-existing physical and pathological issues will not be covered under insurance.
Financial Assistance: Grantees will get a monthly allowance of 900 euros deposited quarterly into their Italian bank account.

The MAECI Scholarship for 2023 is open to all students from eligible foreign countries.

Academic credentials
Only foreign students not residing in Italy and Italian nationals living abroad (IRE)* with a sufficient academic qualification required to enroll in an Italian university/institute may apply. More information can be found on this page.

Age restrictions
Applicants for Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programmes/Advanced Courses in Italian Language and Culture must have reached the age of majority and must not be older than 28 years old by the deadline of this call (born after June 9th, 1994), with the exception of renewals.
With the exception of renewals, applicants for Ph.D. programs must have reached the age of majority and must not be older than 30 years old by the end of this call (born after June 9th, 1992).
Applicants for research projects under academic supervision must be of legal age and not older than 40 years old by the deadline of this call (born after June 9, 1982).

Language abilities and knowledge
Applicants must provide a certificate of competency in the Italian language in order to enroll in an Italian-taught course. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the least needed level is B2. Candidates who have taken an Italian-taught course at the university may submit a language certification granted by a university department’s language teacher.MAECI Scholarship For Foreign Students 2023 Application – How To Apply
Applicants must produce a language certificate demonstrating their competency in English in order to enroll in an English-taught course. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the least-needed level is B2. For candidates from countries where English is an official language and who are applying for courses taught fully in English, self-certification may be approved. Proof of Italian ability is not necessary for courses taught fully in English.
Applicants for Italian language and culture courses must provide a certificate of fluency in the Italian language. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the minimum level needed is A2.
There is no requirement for proof of language competency for Ph.D. programmes and research projects under academic supervision.
