Fulbright Scholarship Requirements for US Applicants

1. Project Statements

All applicants are required to submit their project statements. The project statements offer the candidate an opportunity and chance to state his or her proposed project and special strengths. A project statement should be realistic, well developed, and structured.

2. Curriculum Vitae/Resume

All applicants are required to submit a well-written curriculum vitae or resume. Every CV/Resume should be consistent with the award you are applying for. It should be about 6 pages on average, but Distinguished Scholar awards applicants should make it up to 8 pages. The recommended file type is Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word document. The wordings should be properly arranged, with 12-point 1-inch margins and single line spacing.

3. Letter of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required from all applicants. One of the recommendation letters should be from a supervisor or colleague at the applicant’s place of employment. The second recommendation letter should be from a colleague within the applicant’s discipline. It must not be someone who is working at the same organization as the applicant but the person must be someone in the same discipline as the applicant.

Applicants are required to write an essay on given topics. The first topic is ‘Country selection’ and it must be up to 3,000 characters which include punctuation and spaces.

The second topic is ‘Career Trajectory’, it must be up to 2,000 characters including punctuation and spaces.

The third topic to write about is ‘Cultural Preparation’ with a total character of 2,000 including punctuation and spaces.

The last topic is ‘Teaching Preparation’, this is only required from candidates whose award activities include teaching, no fewer than 2,000 characters are required with punctuation and spaces.

5. The Research or Teaching/Research activities program requires a Bibliography from applicants

Applicants for research or teaching/research awards are required to submit a bibliography. The bibliography should contain sources that reflect the present state of research or it should portray the work on the proposed topic in the field or related field.

6. Research or Teaching/Research activities program requires Syllabi from applicants

Applicants for Research or Teaching/Research awards are required to submit syllabi or sample course outlines. It should be two or three courses and should be consistent with the proposed grant activity.

7. Letter of Invitation

A letter from the proposed host institution indicating their acceptance to host you and your proposed project may be required. Should the said letter be required, it is the duty of the applicant to obtain the letter and upload it.

8. Proof of language proficiency may be required

9. Arts discipline requires Portfolio

Eligibility for the Fulbright Scholarship Program

1. U. S. Citizenship

Applicants must be citizens of the United States of America. He or she must hold U.S. citizenship during the period of application. Permanent residence is not enough and will not be accepted.

2. Residency Abroad

Any candidate that has resided abroad for five years upward or has lived more consecutive years in the 6-year period before the deadline of application is not eligible to apply for the Fulbright Scholarship Program.

3. Degree or Experience

Current faculty, experienced professionals, and administrators are eligible to apply. Postdoctoral applicants are eligible to apply for postdoctoral awards. Doctoral students or graduates who are looking for funds to complete their degrees are not eligible. College graduates who recently graduated with limited professional experience should apply for the Fulbright U.S.  Student Program.

4. Prior Fulbright Scholar Awards

Beneficiaries of the Fulbright Scholar Award can apply for another award but it must be two years after the date of completion of the first award.

Beneficiaries of the Fulbright Specialist Program do not have to wait for two years before applying for the Fulbright Scholarship.

5. Department of State Employees and Immediate Family

Employees of the U.S. Department of State, private or public entities under contract to the US Department of State, and U.S. Agency for International Development, and their immediate families are not eligible to apply for Fulbright program, except if their appointment was terminated at least one year prior to applying for Fulbright Scholar Award.

The Fulbright Scholarship acceptance rate changes every year.
